Frederick Carter’s deep interest in alchemy and all aspects of the supernatural and the occult, led him to produce an esoteric symbolism which is apparent throughout his work. Nowhere is this displayed more clearly than in his works for The Dragon of the Alchemists. Frederick Carter provided little or no explanation regarding the significance of his imagery which combines symbols of established religion with those of mysticism and it is likely that he intended the meaning of many of his images to remain shrouded in mystery.

To-day it is maintained that a certain morbid psychological alteration in what is called "the function of reality" bears traces of archaic thought: though what is called archaic may be basic and independent of morbidity. It was accepted without hesitation in the Renaissance that myth extended the range of mental vision, and mythical incidents and classical names were so used until that mode of metaphorical expression became stereotyped. The subjective response and understanding died; a rationalised meaning took its place and nullified its appeal. But the "libido" was then, and is yet, capable of being led into sublimer paths by the use of myth, image, and metaphor: a sound mode of analogy had, as it ever has had, an impetus and a power of moving the mind that brings poetry to life. The poet was a stargazer, and found in his heaven the images of perfection.

alcohol is still burning in her throat. Passion overcomes her,a

Dead.

Fixing her gaze on the purple candle, raising it high

above her head, she whispers... Maman... Ma mere... An irresistable

urge has her pouring the purple wax over her body

while calling out to HER...

You are walking down the long and sparely lit hallway.

Following a noise, a whisper, the distant echo of MY voice.

It is cold, you are alone and yet you know we are all around -

This netsuke depicts a typical stylized devil Oni

They come from the Buddhist pantheon and appear in many folk stories. In this comical stylization the umbrella is used instead of the kanabo steel club. The eyes of the devil are made of mother-of-pearl and were inserted by the technique ji ita hamekomi.

Unica Zürn’s “Dark Spring” is a haunting story about the debilitating confusion a twelve year old can experience when confronted with gender awareness, sexuality and abuse. This particular work is semi-autobiographical and eerily foreshadows the writer’s own suicide by defenestration. A German Surrealist, Zürn was a writer, an artist, and the prototype for Hans Bellmer’s infamous poupée. Although Zürn’s ink drawings are some of the most striking images to evoke the nightmarish figures of a disturbed mind, her writings are even more telling in their descriptions of the mind’s inner workings and how it fares when imprisoned by its own hallucinations. Institutionalized several times throughout her life, Zürn’s work is replete with reflections on mental illness. Even within a state of clinical madness, she is capable of writing about madness as though it were something she were observing, empathizing with it rather than being subjected to it. Zürn reassures her reader she is aware of her craziness, her delusional fabrications, and that she knows there is beauty in this unique state of being. Everything is treated with the same weight, from hallucinations to concrete reality; they are all authentic experiences in the eyes of Zürn.

With the androgynous mind of Coleridge, the incandescent and resonant voice of Woolf, the asexual beauty of a Steiglitz portrait of Georgia O’Keefe, Zürn is the artist who embodies elements of the Two made into One.
